Kokedama: Exploring the World of Suspended Gardening ($66/Per Person)

Course Type – Interactive Workshop with Brief Presentation (2 Hours)
Description: Kokedama (In English, literally means "moss ball"), also called poor man's bonsai is a ball of soil, covered with moss, in which an ornamental plant grows. The idea has its origins in Japan, where it is a combination of the Nearai (meaning "no pot") Bonsai and Kusamono planting styles. In traditional Japanese gardens, it is often suspended in the air. This also makes a wonderful addition to indoor gardening where it can be hung from ceilings where a much larger pot would be cumbersome. This course provides a brief history of the Kokedama style along with a guided hands-on workshop with all materials and various plants to trial. Students will leave with their very own Kokedama and the knowledge needed to create many more.

Wabi-Kusa: Open Palaudrium Construction ($120/Per Person)

Course Type – Interactive Workshop with Brief Presentation (3 Hours)
Description: Wabi-Kusa Palaudriums are balls of substrate that are covered with aquatic plants and mosses, grown in their terrestrial form, very similar to hydroponics. These substrate balls are placed directly into small glass containers with shallow water in them and then allowed to grow naturally. ‘Wabi’ denotes something aesthetic, imperfectly beautiful and natural (like in wabi-sabi). ‘Kusa’ means ‘grass’ or sometimes ‘plant’. In this class, students will learn techniques used to create these Palaudriums and then utilize various materials and plants to create their very own during the hands-on workshop.
