The Brazilian nightshade is a fantastic species, highly sought after by even seasoned hobbyists. Dark purple, almost black color on tops of leaves and eggplant purple undersides (not counting the array of purple hairs all over leaves and stems) make this plant a show piece. Although they thrive in humid terrarium conditions, and can be very “picky” when acclimating, once they finally do establish, they can adapt to most household conditions and grow steadily. It will vine long lengths with sprays of leaves making this perfect for hanging pots. To get its best color, keep away from sunny windows and instead opt for indirect light from a 6500k led lamp.
Fun Fact: Nightshades, like this, are in the same family (Solanaceae) which also includes Potatoes, Tomatoes, Passionfruit, Deadly Nightshade, Eggplants & Bell and Chili Peppers!
