Our Small Lava Rock is the ideal choice for creating dynamic and natural-looking terrarium hardscapes. Composed of Scoria, a pyroclastic, highly vesicular volcanic rock, these stones are formed when molten lava is ejected from a volcano, cooling mid-air to form distinctive crevices or pits. This process gives the rock its porous texture, filled with macroscopic ellipsoidal vesicles (gas bubbles), which results in a relatively low density.

With its striking dark colors—ranging from brown and black to purplish-red—and its basaltic or andesitic composition, this lava rock adds both visual interest and natural beauty to any terrarium. The lightweight structure of the rock makes it perfect for creating elevated features, enhancing your plant arrangements, and promoting proper drainage in your terrarium setup.

In addition to its light weight and porous texture, it is also very easy to drill into with ceramic drill bits for tubing and placement of branches or mounting rooted plants. Its surface is IDEAL for growing mosses and saxifrages due to its water retaining pits. 

Each rock is randomly chosen and ranges in sizes from .5-2” in average diameter. Pairs fantastically with our Medium Lava Rocks for a tropical island aesthetic.
