This spectacular cultivar of Alternanthera (commonly known as Joy Weeds or Joseph's Coat) is a show stopper with a catch. Hardy and willing to thrive under most conditions, it meets its ultimate potential when kept under very bright light, much like a cactus or succulent. When you do this, the stunning dark purple leaves flesh out an optical feast to behold! Not too many plants can hold that appeal as much as this plant does!

Although it requires bright light like succulents, it differs in it's needs for water levels. Native to hot and humid jungles of the Amazon, it requires moist soil to feel at home. In fact, some Joy Weeds are actually aquatic plants, meaning more terrestrial species are capable of dealing with 'wet feet' as it were.

Clipping it back to a lower node allows it to remain bushy and compact, and can even be grown as a ground cover outdoors in warmer climates! But we have no problem enjoying it indoors up in the Northeast.

Please note that new leaves are green and slowly mature into the dark purple color expected of this variety, so do not be alarmed if this occurs. It grows fairly rapid, so this is only a blip in the grand scheme of its growth.
