Hydrocotyle verticillata, a species in the Pennywort family of semi-aquatic plants is one of the most enjoyable plants to grow in a closed terrarium. No whimsical landscape is complete without the tall stems adorned with thin, disc-shaped leaves. It truly is a conversation starter. While typically reserved for the aquarium trade, this plant actually excels at growing outside of water (which it ideally prefers), favoring a wet substrate and humid air environment. This makes sense considering its natural habitat is on the edges of ponds and lakes. There are many species of ‘Hydro’, but this specific species takes the cake for looks and ease of care. It isn’t without its cautions, however. It has the profound ability to shoot runners, nearly overnight, spreading very quickly and having no problem sprouting new growth intermingled with surrounding plants. While it won’t choke the other plants out, if left to grow too dense, it can block needed light to them. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying what is considered a very lucky plant in many parts of the world. If grown outside a terrarium, make sure to keep the roots submerged in a planter or bowl with soils saturated with water (ie; no drainage) for long term success.
